Frequently Asked Questions
Can I combine personalization designs on my Hug Vest?
Yes! You may use a combination of options to create an exceptional Hug Vest. For example, you could choose a special embroidery option for the front and use an adorable rhinestone design for the back. You may love your company name embroidered on the front and use two different chenille patches on the back. In addition, we offer a truly customized Hug Vest. We could insert a cool zebra print or add lace and rhinestones around the pockets. Use your imagination or discuss your needs with us. We want to work with you to create the distinctive look you desire. Please contact us if you have questions.

Why use a weighted product?
Research has shown that weighted products provide deep touch pressure sensations through the child's trunk. Many children with autism, ADHD or other sensory integration needs respond positively to this deep touch pressure. It helps attain calming and organizing influences to the nervous system. Occupational therapists use weighted products in pediatric therapy for improvement in body awareness, joint and muscle sensations for discrimination of force, pressure discriminations, body position and awareness or changes in body motion. Deep touch pressure is believed to reduce sensory sensitivities, to improve the nervous system state, and to increase potentials for endurance of task attention and persistence. Please consult your medical professional to discuss your specific situation.

"When Jaime goes to sensory integration therapy, he wears a weighted vest. The vest is heavy, but not so heavy that he can't move around. It helps calm him down. After sensory integration therapy, he seems to find it easier to work on skills, and to interact with other people." (Nancy Guggenheim, Coordinating Teacher, Adaptive Physical Education from Autism through the lifespan: the Eden model by David L. Holmes, Ed. D 1997)

Temple Grandin states in her book "Thinking in Pictures" (2006) that pressure applied by a padded, weighted vest can help a hyperactive child sit still. Therapists have found that providing deep pressure can calm the nervous system.

Weighted products should be used under the direction and advice of a healthcare professional or licensed therapist and should be worn while under adult supervision.

When and how long should a weighted vest be worn?
Karen L. Cook, Occupational Therapist, recommends wearing a weighted vest with desktop activities or during times that sensory processing or hypersensitivities are increased (with child's participation in group activities, in crowded or noisy environments, during play on the playground, perhaps in highly stimulating environments like school lunch room). The weight of the vest should be approximately 10% of the child's body weight. Duration of wear is based on age and weight of the child. The vest can be worn during a variety of activities, with duration of wear based on the child attaining his/her personal threshold and tolerance for wear. The child's occupational therapist can assist you in recommendations for initial and continuing wear schedule to structure your child's use and gain in wear and ultimate benefits from use of the vest. Some children need the vest to be fully weighted as recommended for their body weight to benefit from the deep pressure sensation and calming that the vests can provide, while others begin with reduced weight to fit their individual sensory needs for accommodating to wear of the vests. Some children start out wearing the vests for 15-30 minutes during suggested activities or environments where sensory hypersensitivities persist; then ultimately increase wear time, when the vests prove beneficial to the situations/environments that are challenging to the child.
